Billionth Barrel Monument in Brunei
The monument was built in 1991 and was commemorated by Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien on 18 July 1991.
The monument is built to commemorate the production of the billionth barrel of oil produced in the onshore oil field in Seria, which is more or less one hour and 45 minutes travel by car from Banadar Seri Begawan, the capital city of Negara Brunei Darussalam.

Petroleum was discovered in 1929 after several fruitless attempts, and the One Billiont Barrel Monument is built near Seria Well Number One (S-1) was drilled on 12 July 1928.
Oil was struck at 297 meters on 5 April 1929. Seria Well Number 2 was drilled on 19 August 1929, and, as of 2009, continues to produce oil.
Oil production was increased considerably in the 1930s with the development of more oil fields. In 1940, oil production was at more than six million barrels.
The British Malayan Petroleum Company (now Brunei Shell Petroleum Company) was formed on 22 July 1922. The first offshore well was drilled in 1957. [source-1]

Design Concept

Based on the illustrations above, each element or part of the monument has significant meaning as explained below.
Billionth Barrel Monument Symbolism(1.) Symbolizes the flow of crude oil from beneath the earth to the surface.
(2.) Symbolizes the sources of oil coming from various location and directions. Number 6 symbolizes a decade period of oil exploration and production to achieve the billionth barrel.
(3.) The production of oil provides prosperity to the people and the country, Brunei Darussalam, which symbolized by the national emblem.
Nodding donkeys or pumpjacks that are used to pump oil from the ground are also found near the monument.
