As younger country in South East Asia, Timor Leste or East Timor has many tourist attractions although there were political tensions and violence occurred. But now, it is safe to visit including for foreign travelers although they must be adhere standard precautions like other developing country.
With tropical climate, East Timor offers cultural heritage, architectural building and awesome beach with pristine view and coral reefs to explore and doing some exciting activities such as diving and snorkeling. Here are top five tourist destinations and attractions in this country.


Atauro Island

Located 25 km from Dili, Atauro Island becomes favorite spot for snorkelers, divers and green tourists. You can see local divers seek for fish by using traditionally hand-made goggles and spear guns. The accommodation is quite enough with eco-ledge facilities and bamboo cabins. It is relatively quiet beach so you can enjoy your escape by relaxing, enjoying sunrise, sunbath and sunset. You can find beautiful and diverse reefs by diving sea.

Jaco Island

Located on east of East Timor, it is tiny island with 10 square kilometers and 100 meter above sea level. It is holy place for local citizens and considered as uninhabited island. Fortunately, foreign tourists are allowed to get on sandy beach, diving and swimming with help of local fishermen.

Mount Ramelau or Tatamailau

It is about 3000 meters above sea level. It is best place to get journey experience for climbing and hiking. You should be careful because beautiful sunny conditions can quickly turn into heavy fog. Electricity supply won’t come until 6 pm so you need prepare yourself by bring torch, hat and gloves. The local food for dinner and breakfast is quite basic so it is advised to bring something to eat.

Cristo Rei of Dili

It is image of beach and ocean views that you can see from Cristo Rei in Dili, East Timor. Suharto gave it as a present and to appease the predominantly Catholic Timorese. Located on the lovely coast line and open beach of Cape Fatucama, it can be reached from downtown Dili by using transportation. It takes 500 steps to reach the statue while passing by a number of niches showing the Station of the Cross. The pathway is roofed with trees and it is good to stop by every station to read both the English and Timor language.[/caption]
Located on top of Dili, it is statue of Jesus, a gift from Indonesian government for people of East Timor. It is inspired building in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). Now it becomes most popular tourist attractions in Dili. You can enjoy natural views of ocean, harbor and city by climbing 500 steps to reach on top. There is also restaurants and hotel on beach side.

Nino Konis Santana National Park

It is first national park with 556 squre kilometers. There is coral triangle area that shows coral and reef fish as great diversity in world. There are also some endemic birds with 25 species, marsupial cuscus and bats in this park.
